When it comes to search engines, Google is top of the food chain. It is the most used search engine by a country mile. Instead, this post is about how they set the standard for how your site is built.
Google has a set of requirements that are needed for your site to perform well. When a search is done in Google, it’s algorithm goes to work in finding the most suitable website to display to you. Basically, the website that best meets Google’s criteria in relation to the search will be the one that shows at the top of the page.
Easy then, do what Google says and your site will come out top?
SEO is easy – not quite.
See the thing is, although there is lots of information out there on what Google’s requirements might be, no one can be too sure. As web design and SEO practitioners, we have an idea of what works and what doesn’t work. Also, at an entry level the fundamentals are pretty transparent and these will get you quite far in a non-competitive or local area. It’s when you’ve ran out of road with fundamentals that you have to start going down the rabbit hole in search of more information.
On top of that, Google’s algorithm doesn’t stand still. It is continuously being updated to ensure that the best possible user experience is achieved. As the algorithm moves forward, so do the requirements that Google places on websites for them to perform.

There are lots of resources out there that give an idea of how Google’s algorithm has evolved over the years. It gives insights into the why, what, where and how things have moved forward. It doesn’t have all of the answers, but it’s certainly a place to start. It gives on overview about the importance of various features and functions that Google has to offer, making it key information when creating your website or SEO strategy.
